North Carolina-based Duck Donuts makes a foray into the San Diego market when it debuts this fall, marking the furthest west expansion of the franchise.
The novelty here is made-to-order doughnuts, coming to Encinitas. Diners start with a vanilla cake doughnut, then choose a coating from maple, chocolate, blueberry, lemon, strawberry, powdered sugar, peanut butter, cinnamon sugar, or even bare. Next comes toppings ranging from chocolate or rainbow sprinkles, graham cracker or Oreo crumbs, and bacon to shredded coconut or chopped peanuts. Finally, a drizzle of hot fudge, salted caramel, marshmallow, raspberry, or blackberry tops the doughnut.
Most popular across the brand? The maple bacon, followed by a warm, cinnamon sugar doughnut.
In addition to doughnuts, the Encinitas location will also serve Duck Donuts’ coffee blends including Riptide Roast, Light House Blend, and Sunset Pier Decaf, as well as tea, OBX doughnut breakfast sandwich, doughnut sundaes, retail items and more.
The location at 1452 Encinitas Blvd. in Encinitas plans to open this fall, with two additional places in Northern San Diego County potentially on the way. Another location heads to Huntington Beach.
The company takes its name from the childhood vacation spot on the Outer Banks that founder Russ DiGilio and his family visited.
